Originally a restauranteur from Portland OR, my husband, dog and I moved to Santa Fe, NM in the Fall of 2021, yearning for some wide open space, sunshine and a quieter life. We were lucky enough to find our dream home with a studio space right outside Santa Fe along with mountain views and juniper trees. It certainly felt auspicious.
While I had dabbled in ceramics in Portland, I never had the time to do a deep dive. Running two restaurant/bars was a tremendous full time job that took the majority of my time. Part of the reason for moving was to discover... could I change the way I live and possibly make it as a full time artist? Inspired by my dear friend who is making the same leap into the unknown at the age of 50 (shout out to Bianca Youngers Art - check out her beautiful paintings!), I am doing the same.
I am extremely grateful for the artists community of Eldorado (where I reside) and Santa Fe in general. Art is very supported in New Mexico and I have felt extremely encouraged on my journey. That speaks to the ceramics community as a whole. Never have I been a part of SUCH an inclusive, knowledge sharing group of folks (both in real life and on social media); gate keepers they are not. Ceramics is a timeless art form and I suppose it would have never made it through the centuries if people didn’t share their expertise with others. I’d like to give a big shout out to Paseo Pottery and Green River Pottery here in Santa Fe for educating me in the art of ceramics over the last two years. I finally got my deep dive and have been fortunate enough to be taught by some of the leading ceramicists of our time in the art of wheel throwing, hand building, glaze making and the various firing methods, along with the history of ceramics and contemplating the works of others.
I also want to thank my Grandmother Billie, who though passed, I feel the presence of everyday while I work. She too was a ceramicist, a true artist & pioneer of her time. She taught me how to sew, bake, paint, press flowers, dye silks and of course, create pottery. But most importantly, she nurtured the artist in me, guiding me and coaxing me along the way. I hope to make her proud.
So here we go...Come along on the adventure with me, for anything is possible, yes?
Note: I am not a production potter, not even close. My wares are made slowly and thoughtfully by my hands only. While I am open to shipping, I am not set up to drop collections yet ... please come see me at the Eldorado Studio Tour in Santa Fe this September or by appointment in my private home studio. Keep up with my work on Instagram and Facebook.
